PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
TAKING CONTROL OF PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT: CREATING A PERSONNEL POLICY PROCEDURE MANUAL THAT GIVES YOU A LIFE (owners & managers)
A travel agency personnel policy/procedure manual is something most agency owners/managers have a nagging suspicion (or even an absolute certainty) will be very beneficial, but never seem to get around to completing. While just not knowing how to start or how to do it may be factors, the major procrastination culprit is the lack of time. For those who choose to purchase Dr. Joselyn's book, (The Travel Agency Personnel Policy and Procedures Manual Workbook), completing this innovative half-day seminar, will be all they need to have their initial manual ready to hand over to a typist.
This unique seminar/workshop not only helps build or improve a personnel policy/procedure manual, but it demonstrates how to implement and use the manual to its maximum benefit.
Specific topics to be covered include:
- exploring the multiple uses and benefits of a personnel policy/procedure manual.
- understanding the criteria for establishing and writing good personnel policies and procedures.
- exploring thirty-eight individual personnel policy/procedure topics, including consultation on the issues involved.
Although not required for the program, Dr. Joselyn's book, The Travel Agency Personnel Policy and Procedures Manual Workbook is strongly recommended for use in conjunction with this workshop. Books are will be available to seminar attendees at a special price of US$49. The book retails for US$59 + $6 s/h.
THE HUMAN SIDE OF AGENCY MANAGEMENT: FINDING THE BALANCE BETWEEN PROZAC, DR. SPOCK AND ATILLA THE HUN (owners & managers)
If your son or daughter were promoted from being a travel counselor to manager, effective next Monday, what words of practical personnel management would you share from your collective experience and wisdom? That's what this program is all about.
Agency managers and supervisors frequently come from the agent ranks. Often, one of the main reasons a new manager is promoted is because they were the top agent when the position became available. All too often, the new manager or supervisor is expected to make an instantaneous transition to management even though they have little or no prior management experience or personnel management training. This highly interpersonal and interactive presentation is for both the new manager as well as experienced managers. It deals with the very real issues of day to day interpersonal personnel management and supervision. Topics include:
- Understanding and developing a management orientation. The new manager or supervisor must think in management terms. They need to see the overall picture and must embrace profitability and general agency performance as their main objectives.
- Issues of management style including how to effectively manage employees who may at one time have been organizational peers.
- Personal personnel management and the facts of life.
This interactive presentation, based on Dr. Joselyn's educational background and personal experience both as manager of personnel and as a consultant to numerous agency managers, has had an enormous impact on those who have experienced it to date.
This seminar/training program is strictly for management personnel with personnel supervisory responsibilities. The recommended time allotment is approximately one and one half to two hours.
THE SUPERVISOR NEWBY: DRIVERS ED FOR COME OF AGE PERSONNEL MANAGERS (owners & managers)
Based on the book "The New Supervisor: Skills For Success" by Bruce Tepper, CTC, this workshop addresses a challenge common in virtually all travel agencies; a lack of any kind of supervisory training. Historically, management skills training in a travel agency has consisted of "congratulations and good luck" from senior management. Because great agents don't necessarily make great managers, this program is designed to help with the transition and prepare new managers with the basics of how to organize, manage day-to-day operations and supervise others.
The program is flexible in nature with modules covering:
- setting goals and the art of leadership
- how to make the best decisions (on everything from daily schedules to hiring and strategic planning)
- managing the process of change
- time management
- effective communications skills (verbal and written)
- motivating employees
- creative strategies and techniques in problem solving
- delegating work to others (this most crucial aspect can also be offered as a separate program)
- performance reviews and evaluations
- creating a team-oriented environment
This program is designed specifically for new supervisors and managers or those who have had little or no management training. Recognizing the fact that the skills that make great agents are totally different from those that make great managers requires those attending to have an open mind and a willingness to share ideas and explore new methods.
Success in this program can be evaluated on an ongoing basis with benchmarks set up in each of the key areas chosen. Because this program is offered in a modular format, it can be presented and tracked by module. For single sessions the recommended time allocation is between one-half and a full day.
PERSONNEL BURNOUT: PREVENTION AND REPAIR FROM SLOW BURNS TO FLAME OUTS (owners & managers)
This seminar examines the multi-faceted nature of what is generally lumped under the term "burnout". The multiple causes of this phenomenon will be identified and, both counteractive and preventive measures will be explored. They include:
- an exploration of the growing employee availability problem and its' implications for personnel management plans. Attendees will learn how viable employee acquisition can have a positive impact on "burnout" prevention.
- an examination the causes of "burnout", including the traditional absence of career-track possibilities for travel agent counselors. An innovative career-track model for travel agency operations will be introduced.
- recognition that another frequent cause of "burnout" is an intense and stressful job that often has less variation than many might first assume. The importance of agency "downtime" management will be examined, and its' positive contributions to minimizing the stress of activity repetition will be emphasized.
- an understanding of how day-to-day personnel policies and procedures can contribute to "burnout" or, help to prevent it. A number of operational personnel policies and procedures that have the potential to impact "burnout" will be discussed and recommendations will be made on additions or modifications to those your agency may presently have.
This seminar, targeted at owners and managers, is one and one half to two and a half hours in length. It fits well with The Personnel Challenge to make a half day seminar.
THE PERSONNEL CHALLENGE: SOLUTIONS FOR DEALING WITH AN ENDANGERED SPECIES (owners & managers)
This presentation deals with the growing difficulty the travel agency community is having in finding and retaining qualified service personnel. The root causes of this critical industry issue are examined in detail.
This session explores practical solutions to the growing personnel crisis. Employee recruitment, training and retention are seen as vital interactive components in the development of this plan. Some, but not all, of the issues covered include:
- identification and utilization of non-traditional sources of qualified talent.
- an exploration of historical assumptions about "required" personnel attributes and employment configurations that (1) may have always been in error and (2) often prevent seeing and seizing personnel opportunities.
- the key role that training can and must play in personnel management.
- retention issues such as incentive compensation, cafeteria benefit plans, burnout minimization, supervisory evaluation and more.
After hearing this presentation, the attendee will never think about their management of personnel in quite the same way again.
The recommended time for this presentation is between one and one-half hours. It works well in combination with "Personnel Burnout: Prevention and Repair From Slow Burns To Flame Outs" and "The Human Side Of Agency Management: Finding The Balance Between Prozac, Dr. Spock And Atilla The Hun".
TRAINING AS ORGANIZATION SEX: PERPETUATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF THE AGENCY LINEAGE (owners & managers)
Got your attention! We hope so, because building a training plan seems to garner too little attention in most travel agency organizations. Maybe it's because most people think that thinking about training is a lot more boring than thinking about sex. Maybe they're right. If your future well being counts for much, maybe not.
In a service business your employees are the product. Despite this testimony to the obvious, far too many travel agencies spend far greater resources, including time, on the management and enhancement of other areas of their operation. This program focuses on the critical need to develop a formal travel agency training plan, regardless of agency size.
In this presentation, attendees will learn:
- how to build and cultivate a personal growth and training investment attitude.
- how to profile your travel agency training needs.
- how to identify training that all employees need.
- how to develop a personalized training and growth plan for each employee.
- how to develop an overall formal travel agency training plan that is relevant, timely and not only cost effective, but a terrific investment.
While there is no magic in training, everything your travel organization does, from effective selling to customer service and technical proficiency can be positively impacted by the right kind of training. It is simply too important a management function to let happen without a plan. Training becomes the driving force for perpetuation and enhancement of the agency lineage over time.
This presentation, designed for owners and managers is designed for one and one half hours to two hours in length.
HOUR GLASS MANAGEMENT AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT: GETTING MORE OUT OF YOUR DAY (all employees)
Have all the money you need and would like to have? Unlikely, but possible. Have all the time you need and would like to have? No chance! This program addresses the basics of time management that we all need to learn and/or be reminded of. Attendees will learn:
- the seven-step plan to better use of your time.
- how to better establish and organize priorities for managing the time available.
- how to identify major time wasters and ways to reduce their impact
- how to avoid the myths of time management than stand in the path of realistic solutions.
- how to implement a plan you can live with
This two hour program is for any agency owner, manager
or other agency employee concerned about a lack of time and not having enough hours in the day. We can't give you more time, but we can give you tips for getting more out of the time you have. |
